LearnGerman.com is a free German language learning resource created by qualified German language teachers. Our mission is simple: to make learning German accessible, enjoyable, and effective for everyone — no matter where you are in the world.

Our Story

LearnGerman.com was founded by Marieke van den Berg, a certified German language teacher based in Utrecht with over 12 years of experience teaching German to international students, expats, and professionals from all over the world. During her years in the classroom, Marieke noticed a consistent gap in online German learning resources: most were either too academic and dry, or too simplified to be genuinely useful.

She set out to create something different — a website that treats German learners as intelligent adults, explains the language honestly and clearly, and provides the kind of warm, practical guidance that accelerates real progress. LearnGerman.com is the result.

Our Teaching Philosophy

We believe that language learning should be enjoyable, not a chore. Our content is written conversationally, with real examples from everyday German life, because we know that dry grammar rules without context are quickly forgotten. We focus on practical, high-frequency language — the German you will actually use — rather than obscure rules and academic vocabulary.

We also believe in honesty. German is not always easy. We tell you which parts are genuinely tricky (the G, the de/het system, subordinate clause word order) rather than pretending everything is simple. This honest approach helps learners set realistic expectations and celebrate real progress.

Meet Our Team

Marieke van den Berg — Founder & Lead Teacher

Marieke holds a degree in German Linguistics from Utrecht University and a professional teaching certification (Eerstegraads Bevoegdheid). She has taught German at language institutes in Utrecht, Berlin, and Eindhoven, and has developed German learning materials for organisations including international companies and government departments. She lives in Utrecht with her husband and two children.
